Pomade is the oldest and most classic styling product for men: a cream or wax that gives your hair hold and shine and keeps it in shape all day. Think of the slick back, the side part and the pompadour. In this article you’ll learn exactly what pomade is, the difference between water-based pomade and oil-based pomade, and how to apply it the way a barber does.

What is pomade?

The word comes from the French pommade, originally an ointment made from apple and fat. Today, pomade is a styling product that makes your hair smooth, shiny and controlled. Unlike gel, pomade doesn’t dry hard: your hair stays pliable and you can comb it back into shape all day. Unlike wax or clay, pomade gives shine instead of a matte finish.

Water-based or oil-based: the difference

Water-based pomade Oil-based pomade
Washing out With water, in a single wash Difficult, stays in for days
Hold Strong, restylable with a little water Medium to strong, greasy feel
Shine Healthy shine High, greasy shine
Scalp Fresh, doesn’t clog pores Can burden the scalp with daily use
Who it’s for Anyone who styles daily Rockabilly looks and enthusiasts

Barbers almost always work with water-based products. It’s fresh, easy to wash out and you can touch up your hairstyle all day. KAPR Pomade is exactly that kind of water-based pomade: strong hold, healthy shine and suitable for all hair types.

How to apply pomade in four steps

1
Towel-dry

Wash your hair with professional shampoo and pat it dry. Pomade works best on slightly damp hair.

2
Pre-style

A few pumps of Hair Tonic, then blow-dry in the direction of your hairstyle. This adds volume and makes the pomade hold longer.

3
Pea to fingertip

Start small. Warm the pomade between your palms and work it through your hair from back to front.

4
Comb into shape

Comb or brush your hairstyle into shape. Not enough hold? Add a little more. Want it sleeker? Finish with Hairspray.

Which pomade suits your hair?

  • Thick or coarse hair: a pomade with strong hold such as KAPR Pomade, optionally combined with tonic for extra grip.
  • Fine or thin hair: preferably no shine, as it makes fine hair look flatter. Choose Matte Pomade and use Sea Salt Spray for volume.
  • Curly or wavy hair: pomade defines curls and keeps frizz under control. Use a small amount of product and spread it well.
  • Short hair with texture: then you’re better off with Hair Clay; read matte pomade or clay.

Frequently asked questions about pomade

Is pomade bad for your hair? Water-based pomade isn’t. You wash it out every day and it leaves no layer on your scalp. Oil-based pomade can clog pores with daily use.

Can I use pomade every day? Yes. Wash your hair daily or every other day with a mild shampoo and apply the pomade to clean, slightly damp hair.

Pomade or gel? Gel dries hard and gives maximum hold; pomade stays pliable and restylable. Read pomade or gel: what’s the difference.

How much pomade do I need? A pea-sized amount for short hair, a fingertip for medium-length hair. You can always add more; taking it away is harder.
